Welcome to the July newsletter. Things may be quiet and cold outside, but Wall to Wall members are flat out, both in the gallery and elsewhere.
Feature artist, Leigh Dougherty
Water’s Edge, by Leigh Dougherty.
Leigh takes on the feature spot at the front of the gallery for the next month.
“For some years now, I have been focusing on my abstracted landscapes, recognisable by their angular mountains gilded with gold and surrounded by soft clouds. However, having just done a body of work in this genre for the McKee Gallery I thought it timely to revisit my more traditional landscapes for my exhibition at Wall to Wall Art in July/August.
“This exhibition is a call back to my impressionist landscapes and once I started down this painting journey again, I wondered why I had stepped away from it for so long as it is a far more relaxing way of creating. As artists we don’t often get the chance to just play in our studios and develop new ideas or even revisit old ones.
“So, it has been a joy to come back to this more loose and expressive way of painting. Some of these paintings will be referenced from reality whilst others allude to the idea of somewhere you may have visited in the past. A déjà vu moment if you will.
“My abstracted works, which I still love to paint, are very structured and have so much tension in them whereas these pieces speak of quiet, gentle moments. Hopefully this comes through in the delivery of my work and more importantly that you enjoy viewing them.”

Exhibitors in SEVEN, at the McKee Gallery, from left, Angela Herbert, Glen Davenport, Tom Brooker, Ronnie Baker, Peter Gibbs, Virginia Watson and Clare Wilcox.
Wall to Wall members Virginia Watson and Peter Gibbs were part of the exhibition Seven, which opened in the McKee Gallery at the Suter last week and continues until July 28.

Peter spoke for the group at the opening, basing his speech in this article, which appeared in the Nelson Leader last week. Click here for article.
Paul Deacon with a nautical theme
I am having a joint exhibition of marine art at the Artspace Gallery Petone up until July 21 … a mixture of merchant/naval/historical oil paintings of varying sizes.
The exhibition is in conjunction with the 125th Anniversary of the Mission to Seafarers organisation in Wellington … the organisation has hubs in most major ports worldwide, including Nelson. It is a non-denominational organisation and service (originally Anglican) that offers a wide range of support to international seafarers. In my seafaring years I often visited the Mission to Seafarers venues for a few beers, socialisation and an opportunity to phone home (this is in the 70s and 80s, pre-mobile phones). Ports in Roman Catholic countries also offered a similar support service through their Stella Maris seamen’s centres.
You can read more about the Mission to Seafarers here.
Captain Riskes, by Paul Deacon.
I also have one piece of artwork on show in the current 'on-line' exhibition with the Australian society of Marine Artists in Australia. Not my usual line of artwork but a quick watercolour painting I did when serving in the merchant navy of an amazing old Dutch skipper I served under, Captain Ritskes … a no airs and graces humorous Frieslander, who espoused the wearing of old dungarees and clogs as his uniform and was a lover of copious amounts of beer, Geneva (gin) and tobacco.
Virginia Watson heads south
Collective member Virginia Watson has been invited to exhibit at the Riversdale Arts Exhibition which opens July 19.
She's chosen to send a bit of beachy Nelson to the deep south, by exhibiting four of her shore bird works inspired by the estuaries around Nelson and Tasman.
Me Time, by Virginia Watson.
The beautiful kotuku/white heron is rare and solitary, so the painting depicts the leggy bird enjoying its own company in its reflection.
Giclee prints of this work are now available in Wall to Wall Art Gallery.
Sue Birchfield in teaching mode
Sue is holding a workshop at Impressions, 11A Sundial Square, Richmond on July 27.
